Many of the island’s creatures have adapted to the conditions of life in the rainforest. Original people from Kalimantan are called “ Dayak “, meaning people who live up stream.

In the beginning, Tanjung Putting National Park was a preserve area for plants and wild animals. An area about 305.000 ha. It was determined by the Dutch Government on June 13, 1936, and by the Forest Minister of Republic Indonesia, as the National Park on May 12, 1982. Since 1996, this National Park, which is located at the Peninsula of South West Central Borneo, has been enlarged into 415,40ha.

This Park has plenty of ecosystems. These are lowland forest, dry land forest, swamp forest, tropical rain forest, mangrove, sea forest and secondary forest. Also this park is the largest tropical rain forest in South East Asia.
